Georgia Central upgrades track to handle heavier rail cars
The Georgia Central Railway has upgraded its entire 211-mile line between Macon and Savannah to handle 286,000-pound rail cars, the short line announced today. The upgrade was necessary to match the capacity of connecting national railroads and increase the short line’s competitiveness, Georgia Central officials said in a press release.
September marks all-time high for Class 8 retail sales
September set an all-time record for Class 8 retail truck sales, according to FTR. U.S. Class 8 retail sales totaled 28,200 units, up 4% from the previous record in December 2006. Sales were up 20% from August, and 20% year-over-year.
FIATA releases paper to address corruption
The International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) has released a best practices paper to address corruption and bribery in freight forwarding. The paper, produced by FIATA’s Advisory Body Legal Matters says that the Corruption Perceptions Index 2018 (Transparent International) showed that more than two-thirds of the 180 countries assessed scored below 50.

The number of job openings nationwide fell in August for the third straight month and hit a one-and-a-half-year low, coinciding with a decline in hiring that’s taken place against the backdrop of a slowing U.S. economy.
