Medium-Duty Gains in September Led by Class 7

U.S. retail sales of Class 4 through Class 7 trucks rose 5.8% in September compared with a year earlier, and included large gains in Freightliner sales of Class 7 vehicles. Overall sales reached 20,278 compared with 19,173 in the year-earlier period, WardsAuto.com reported.

September marks all-time high for Class 8 retail sales

September set an all-time record for Class 8 retail truck sales, according to FTR. U.S. Class 8 retail sales totaled 28,200 units, up 4% from the previous record in December 2006. Sales were up 20% from August, and 20% year-over-year.

FMCSA awards $77 million in truck safety grants

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) awarded over $77 million in grants to help states improve safety and reduce crashes. The funding package, announced on September 25, includes $43.3 million for truck safety technology, $32 million to improve commercial driver’s license (CDL) programs, and $2 million in commercial motor vehicle training for veterans.

Truck Tonnage in August Climbs 4.1%

Seasonally adjusted truck tonnage rose 4.1% in August compared with a year earlier, according to American Trucking Associations’ For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index. The index also showed seasonally adjusted tonnage increased 4.3% year-to-date compared with the first eight months in 2018.

Diesel Price Falls for Eighth Consecutive Week, Down 0.7¢ to $2.976 a Gallon

The U.S. average retail price of diesel dropped 0.7 cent to $2.976 per gallon, the Department of Energy reported Sept. 3, as the price of crude dropped 2% amid the ongoing U.S.-China trade dispute. The price of diesel has fallen for eight consecutive weeks since July 15, when trucking’s main fuel cost $3.051 per gallon.
