FTR: Freight demand remains strong in ‘unfavorable’ shipping environment

Regulatory pressures are rising, and the capacity required for a hot freight market was slow to increase in the first quarter, putting pressure on rates, according to FTR analysis. The February Shippers Conditions Index reading from FTR was unchanged from January at -11.1, reflecting an unfavorable environment for shippers.

Truck tonnage down again in March as capacity constraints take hold

Truck tonnage declined for the second consecutive month in March, in a sign that the industry continues to cool after rapid growth at the end of 2017. The American Trucking Associations (ATA) reported that truck tonnage declined 1.1% in March from February’s levels, following an upwardly-revised 0.8% decline in the previous month.
